Saving up for a Naomi.

Post by OldFoo »

Hello,

Recently I've been contemplating purchasing a Naomi or Naomi 2. I'm leaning towards the the Naomi mostly due to finances (I've been selling all of my old systems / carts on ebay). Can you guys let me know if you think I should spend the extra cash & get the Naomi 2?

I think I've read that some Naomi boards do not support the GD-ROM, is this correct. If this is the case, how can I make sure that the one I get does support it?

Also Ive read that the Naomi outputs to VGA, this means that I should have relatively little trouble hooking it up to a computer monitor, right?

What would be a very economical way to have a controller for my naomi? I'm a bit strapped for cash (aren't we all), from what I've read so far it is to build a super gun. Is there any decent information out there on building a super gun for the Naomi?

Thanks

I am a newbie when it comes to Naomi but I'll try to help you out as much as I can.

From what I understand the GD-ROM works with Naomi and Naomi 2 as long as it has a BIOS that supports it. The only reason to spend out more for a Naomi 2 is for a few more recent games that wont work on the original.

As for the VGA you should be able to hook it up to any pc monitor no problem.

If you build a supergun to run a Naomi the only difference between a Jamma supergun and Naomi one is Naomi will need a 3.3v supply as well.

Hope this helps, I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong about anything. :)

Ace is correct to a certain degree. One thing that was not mentioned was the JAMMA interface.

To connect the Naomi to a Supergun or cab, you will need a Jamma Interface. These come in several flavors, from this link:

The most preferrable unit is the Capcom I/O.

However, since you are interested in a GD-Rom setup, I would recommend the Sega I/O converter (costs less than a Capcom unit), and either getting the Sun PSU, or converting a ATX PSU to power the whole setup. Its not recommended to power the Naomi 1 mobo, and GD-Rom off a Capcom I/O, it taxes the power converters inside. And the Naomi 1 is a power hungry board.

Thanks for getting back to me guys!

The more I read, it seems the more I need to know. I'll keep you guys posted on my situation.

Is CoinoppExpress pretty much the only non-auction place to purcase a naomi? Thanks again.

Naomi 2 is only worth it if your into VF4 or Initial D.

Coinopexpress has a bit of a rep for dodgy goods, so imo more suited to a experienced user, you might be better off buying either from Yahoo Japan or a Japanese arcade shop such as MAK or G-front with Shoping mall Japan as your broker.

If you can you will also be better off buying a Naomi cab rather than using Jamma adapters & such.

Coinop, they'll try to rip you on shipping and handling, (I know) try checking out ebay, or posting a WTB (Want to Buy) in the market forum. I'm sure some other users will try to set you up.

You can try excellentcom.net, they do not have prices on their site, send an email, and they'll quote you a price plus shipping.

Remember try to purchase a set, game plus hardware, if you opt for a plain no game setup, the price will be higher. Companies like that want to move sets more than individual pieces. Good luck.
