Why does Syfy channel make crappy movies?

Everytime a big Scifi flick comes out Syfy channel makes their own shitty version.
What is the deal with this?

They're trying to get a 'piece of the pie', as it were. They want to cash in on the popularity of a good movie by getting money through whatever commercial ads will give them the time of day.
