DIMM Board Problem?

Post by OldFoo »

I am relatively new to NAOMI boards and this is my first GD ROM game. Have a Maze of Kings GD ROM setup with an error 22 when powered on. I think I have reviewed the relevant posts regarding this topic with no success. GD Rom is spinning, fan is blowing, all mobo tests are good except DIMM board test. The mobo recognizes the DIMM board but the test times out. I have taken it all apart, reseated the memory boards and the top and bottom boards with no success. The DIMM battery is dead, does this need to be good to run or just to keep the GD ROM from having to reload? The mobo will run a cart just fine. Does this indicate a bad DIMM board or could the problem be in the SCSI cabel or GD ROM? Do they even need to be connected to run a successful DIMM board test? I have checked all voltages and they are good. I should mention I am testing this on the bench and although I have the I/O board connected and recognized, I don't have it hooked up to the gun board (as I don't have the guns or the monitor sensors but that is another issue!).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :D

It is a good possibility that the Dimm board is busted. The best thing to do next is try the Dimm board on another Naomi mobo. If it works, then it might be something like a bent pin. If not, then it's still busted. Also, what version BIOS is your system currently running? If you don't know how to find out, take a look here--->BIOS FAQ. You need to make sure that your system is using a more current version because previous revisions did not support the Dimm hardware.

Thanks! BIOS is EPR-21577E so that should be ok. I tried another mobo and same thing happens. None currently for sale on eBay that I see, where is the best place to get a DIMM Board? Is it worth paying some place like ARC to repair?

Just my 2 cents. I have had dealings with ARC and I have been pleased with Ken's work. If you want to keep it send it to him. When you get it back it'll be like new. Sure you could go buy another but you don't know what you're getting. I've had Ken repair 2 NAOMI boards and a GD-ROM. He is a master and knows his Sega products. :smt020

Hi, all, i have a problem with my DIMM too... basically, if i run my naomi mobo without any cart, i see the logo then error message 01, and this is normal, i run the test and all passed.

When i connect the DIMM, just the DIMM, after i power up the system, i get black screen and no sound, wait for a miunte or two but nothing change...

Unfortunatley i haven't any carts to try, i'm waiting for one i get on ebay a few days ago...

Is it possible that is my DIMM is broken or is a voltage problem???

My set up is a naomi 1 with capcom i/o...

Generally speaking, the Capcom I/O is insufficient to run the GD system. However, powering the system with the Dimm only will give you a GD reader error which you are not getting. To your knowledge, has the Dimm ever worked?

Not in my hand, but for what i know i say yes, i trust the person who sold me the DIMM.

Does the fact that i've got a D Bios on my naomi mean something with this?

For what i know, the dimm must work with any bios without a GD ROM...

Yep it does.

according to http://www.sega-naomi.com/bios.htm you need at least an "E" revision for GD-ROM setup. :smt020

Thanks for all of the help, my first experience here has been a good one! I did contact Ken of ARC and am going to send him my dimm for repair. He even walked me through repairing a burnt trace on another mobo which fixed a bad video ground and got the video nice and bright again. Awesome members, great website! Thanks again!

Just for run the naomi and a dimm is a E or later necessary??

...ok, i've just recieved an H Japan Bios ten minute ago, later i go to try with this, let you know!

UPDATE

i've just changed the bios, the mobo pass all the ram test, but when i plug the dimm i've got the same problem (black screen, no sound and nothing happen)...

Wait to get my the cart i've won on e bay and then will see if it's a mobo problem or the dimm is fucked up...
