what is the Cat5 connector on newer dimm boards used for?

Post by OldFoo »

So does anyone know what is the CAT5 (ethernet?) connector on newer dimm boards actually used for?

... and does it actually use ethernet or some other protocol? ...

(I'm wondering if it might potentially be fun/useful to plug a pc into it and write some software to emulate something ).

Thanks,

Neil.

used to load the game from a server using TC/IP protocol.

Only a few games do this, such as WCCF which also use a 512MB dimm, biggest for the Naomi 2.

How do you initiate the loading? As networking is my real job, I hooked it (dimm 3.17) up to see what kind of traffic it sent/listened to - but it was all quiet..

IIRC Wccf use a "special" dimm board (at least for the 2 units that driving the big screen) that have a "serial" connector on the top. that serial link is used to keep 2 naomi2 that drive the big screen in sync.

At the boot the satellite naomi check for "server" (a normal pc) and when it's ready, the attract starts. On the pc a server programm run just to schedule the next matchs.

I even connect a laptop to the internal hub and i can browse the shared folder on the pc (Was a japanese Xp embedded IIRC).

I've also found out that the Naomi uses the Network port for communicating movement data for Cycraft cabs, such as Initial D3 Cycraft Edition.
