I/O recomendations for JVS application

Post by OldFoo »

I've basiclly converted my Astro 2 into a JVS cabinet. There's a 29" nanao monitor and sega stereo amp on board, along with a 5v,12v 3.3v SUN PSU. I'm using a capcom I/O for the USB mapping, but I was wondering if there's a better solution. I have a sega JVS I/O and a sega Jamma I/O version B at my disposal. Aside from the ease of the capcom kick harness, is there any reason I should keep using my capcom I/O? I have a naomi kick harness on hand, so it'll be easy adding in the kick buttons on one of my sega I/O's.

I guess what I'm getting at here is what should I do in order to make my Astro 2 truely JVS? I'm interested in being able to run other JVS applications (such as System 256 and type x mostly)

Are you talking about, for example, the namco system 256 boards like tekken 4? If so, that I can probably help with...let me know.

Yeah thats exactly what I'm talking about. In the near future, I'd like to run Tekken 5 and Bassara Cross X (when it drops in price). Also, I'd like to run Taito Type X. I have 3 different sega I/O's, and what i've heard they can be used on both of these systems.

Ok, here goes...hopefully the principle is the same in your case:

Well, in my case(Tekken 4 in an original sega fighting vipers cab-well I drilled out some extra button holes but other than that original) I basically made an extension cable that plugs into the cab(in the case of fighting vipers it is spliced into the existing lines allowing them to stay plugged into the fighting vipers board) and ends in a jamma harness. That allows you to cross over the wiring as needed without having to completely re-wire the cab. The only glitch I had was that I had to put a siwtch on the power so that if both were plugged in at the same time(as is the case when I attach tekken 4-remember, fighting vipers is always plugged in)they don't both power on-only the one I choose does. I ran the switch to the control panel for easy access. The nice thing is that since it now has a standard jamma harness in it I can plug just about any jamma board into it and play...only one that's really given me grief is ultimate mk3 but that one has a bad rom on it to begin with so who knows. ;) And of course, I only have a handful of boards so I certainly haven't tested it with everything out there.

In my cabs that are already jamma I use extensions that go from a fingerboard(to plug into the existing harness) to a new jamma harness, again allowing you to change the wiring without rewiring the whole cab...

And if you wanted to, using this method you could plug a number of different systems into the cab via the extensions and just use a switch to control which one powers on. Although to be honest the most I have currently done is 3 in my neo geo cab(neo geo, shinobi, and ps2arcade card).

I won't lie and say the method is perfect, but for the most part it works fine.

At any rate, I hope this pertains to your situation and helps you out somewhat. If not, sorry I misunderstood. ;)

[EDIT]

my lovely wife thinks I'm a bit vague about the extension harnesses and that I should mention more specifically what they do...so as examples, here are the ones I use most: I made one that converts old sega games(like shinobi) to standard jamma, one converts fighting vipers to jamma, one for atomiswave to jamma and the newest one I made accomodates the naomi system(use it on the supergun currently as I need to rewire the controls in my cab)...Like I say, it's basically just an easy way to convert pinouts to whatever you want without rewiring the cab harness...also the switch is connected specifically to the power from the wall(inline no fuse), then splits into the boards; that's how it controls which one powers up...you flip the switch then flip the main cab power...at any rate I suck at explaining things so let me know if any clarification is needed or anything.

I have a US world series naomi cab that has full JVS wiring inside, but no JVS hardware. I do have a Capcom IO that is of course jamma. Are you saying that I can make a harness to splice or connect the jvs and jamma together so I wont need another IO? If so, can I see pics of your setup....and how much would you charge for a harness like that?
